ALASKA RAILROAD painting and lettering in the distinctive original silver with blue/yellow striping.
The ALASKA RAILROAD has four operational Budd RDCs and uses them on the Hurricane Turn flag train, and on the Whittier and Spencer Glacier/Grandview services.
The ALASKA’s ‘Hurricane Turn’ which departs from Talkeetna is, in my opinion, one of the best kept secrets in the world. This RDC train serves as a vital link for the locals in the Alaskan bush as well as providing transportation for the outdoorsman and railfans. Its laid back atmosphere and folksy appeal is truly a once in a lifetime experience. It departs near the section house in Talkeetna, Alaska. The RDC will stop at various unmarked destinations and drop off local residents and their baggage. The engineer and conductor will play paperboy and throw newspapers to railroad workers and locals. The RDC generally terminates at the Hurricane section house and returns to Talkeetna. However, if there is a little extra time and only tourists are aboard, the engineer may take the RDC out to the Hurricane Gulch Trestle Bridge. On a recent trip, a lady standing beside the track flagged the RDC down and handed the engineer several dozen homemade peanut butter cookies who in turn shared them with all the passengers!
