Here is a Lionel 6-8309 O Gauge Southern 2-8-2 Mikado Steam Locomotive & Tender from 1983. This engine headed up the Southern Famous American Railroad Set from that year and was the first Lionel-produced engine with the 2-8-2 wheel arrangement. It features die-cast construction, smoke, sound of steam (a sort of prehistoric Railsounds), electronic whistle, magne-traction, operating headlamp, pullmor motor, transformer controlled forward-neutral-reverse, and a nice paint scheme.
Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, the 2-8-2 was an innovator breaking from the traditional manufacturing of locomotives, and featuring a larger firebox paving the way for greater speeds at a higher rate of power! Before we knew it, the 2-8-2 also known as the “Mikado” found itself in rail yards around the world from the United States to the Congo hauling freight from stop to stop. The Mikado would undergo a temporary name change after the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941 shortly going by the McArthur, before eventually going back to the Mikado name after WW2.
